News from Emma Carter

Some pretty big things have been happening for me professionally since October, and I really wanted to update you all since you have been such influential people in my academic career.

In January, I started a new job at an immigration law firm here in Atlanta. While I truly enjoyed the work I was doing at KNAPP, my heart and my passion is in immigration and advocacy. When the opportunity to work with Kuck & Baxter Immigration arose (https://www.immigration.net/), I couldn’t pass it up! I am working on getting my headshot put on the website, but I did give WFU a bit of a “shoutout” in my bio (both in English and in Spanish https://www.immigration.net/our-people/our-people-bios/#emma-carter). I love working as a Legal Assistant with one of the partners at the firm. It has truly been a huge professional win for me!

At the firm, I am able to use my translation and interpreting skills alongside my everyday responsibilities. I frequently have the opportunity to translate documents from Spanish into English that are needed by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services from clients at our firm. I also have the ability to interpret for clients at their USCIS interviews. I actually had my first interview which required interpreting today for a family applying for their Green Cards. I cannot express how rewarding and exciting that interview was. In the moment after the interview, I knew all of my schooling, studying, and practicing had paid off!

My last exciting update for now is something that I found out only a few hours ago: I passed the written portion of my Georgia State Court Interpreter exam! This means I now have to do 3-6 hours of court observations (hours depending on the presence of an interpreter) and then pass the oral exam. It is almost hard to believe this is a dream that is really in the process of coming true.

As always, thank you for being such important factors in my academic and professional successes. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today!
